Why choose Myofunctional Therapy?

Our functional breathing experts, Sara and Khushbu standing together

The way you breathe can profoundly affect your body. Breathing through your nose is the natural way our bodies were meant to breathe. The nose filters, warms and adds moisture to the air. Healthy Nitric Oxide (NO) is produced in the paranasal sinuses and released into the body when we nasal breath.

Nitric Oxide will help reduce many inflammatory diseases. Therefore, when your airway becomes compromised it has a detrimental impact on your overall health.

One of the goals for therapy is to correct tongue posture. The tongue is meant to occupy the entire roof of the mouth. It is the natural expander and retainer for the palate. Good tongue posture enables correct growth of the teeth and facial development. When the tongue sits on the bottom of the mouth it can obstruct the airway and cause many breathing disorders including sleep apnea.

The simple act of breathing with a closed mouth reduces the risk of tooth decay and gum disease. In fact, recent studies have shown lip seal promotes better sleep quality.

Using simple and painless exercises, this therapy can strengthen and correct your muscles to improve the function of your airway. Better yet, with a personalized therapy plan, you will be able to eat, speak, sleep, and breathe properly while boosting your self-esteem.

The cost of therapy varies depending on your individual conditions and the number of therapy sessions required. For your convenience in-office financing is available.

Therapy sessions typically take 30-45 minutes and are scheduled every 2-3 weeks. We will focus on nasal breathing (day and night) and proper tongue resting position with good lip seal. Here's How Our Experts Can Help

Explore how you could breathe your way to improved wellness.

TMJ Pain
TMJ refers to the temporomandibular joint located in your jaw. Occasionally, this joint can become inflamed and lead to severe headaches, jaw pain, neck pain and other symptoms.

With myofunctional therapy, our experts can help restore your joint's functionality, providing you with lasting pain relief and an increased range of motion.

TMJ therapy can include a series of behavior modification techniques, facial and tongue exercises designed to strengthen your jaw joint. With an accurate diagnosis and individualized treatment plan, our specialists can help treat these symptoms.
Tongue-Tie
Tongue-tie is a medical condition where the frenum (tissue that connects your tongue to the floor of your mouth) is tighter than it should be. This condition can cause speech and oral developmental problems in infants and younger children, which carries into adulthood if not addressed.

The most predictable treatment for a tongue-tie is myofunctional therapy in conjunction with a minor surgical procedure called a frenectomy. Myofunctional therapy will strengthen the tongue both pre and post-surgery.

Just as physical therapy helps to train our muscles post injury, myofunctional therapy helps the soft tissues of the mouth, face and neck. By doing this we will ensure you are able to use your tongue effectively for nasal breathing, swallowing, lip seal, and prevent tongue-tie relapse.
Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is a severe sleep disorder that causes you to stop breathing momentarily while you sleep. This is caused by your airway collapsing.

Myofunctional therapy helps treat this condition in two important ways. Firstly, the therapy keeps your tongue in its natural position on the palate to allow for correct airflow. Secondly, our team helps you strengthen your throat muscles to ensure they don't collapse.

Both phases relieve sleep apnea's common symptoms and encourage a good night's sleep.

Ortho Relapse

Most people think of orthodontics as a permanent solution to a misaligned bite or a crooked smile. In many cases orthodontic relapse occurs, resulting in repeated rounds of orthodontic treatment.

Orthodontic relapse is when teeth move into unfavorable positions after treatment. Tongue thrust, mouth breathing, and an incorrect tongue position are all contributors towards orthodontic relapse. Myofunctional therapy can address many of these issues by correcting your tongue's posture and bringing balance to your bite. Our specialists prescribe individualized exercises to help you and your orthodontist make the most of your orthodontic treatment.

Tongue Thrust
A tongue thrust is when your tongue pushes forward or to the side as you swallow and speak. This forces you to ingest small amounts of air while eating or drinking, leading to gastrointestinal issues such as acid reflux, excess gas, and/or bloating. Likewise, it can also contribute to oral problems such as difficulty speaking, misaligned teeth, bruxism, or TMJ pain.

Through oral myofunctional exercises, our therapists can retrain muscles to help correct your tongue's posture, lip seal, and establish healthy oral development.
Incorrect Tongue Position
We tend to breathe through our mouths when we exert ourselves, but did you know that doing this routinely can negatively affect your ability to breathe, eat, and even speak properly? If you or a family member struggles with nasal breathing, Functional Breathing Specialists can help!

Using myofunctional therapy, our experts provide targeted exercise programs that promote a proper lip seal and improved positioning of your tongue and facial muscles. Your personalized treatment plan will help you achieve effective nasal breathing and experience the joy of breathing freely!
